The Crisis in Affordable Housing |
On any given night in Australia around 14,000 people sleep rough.
But this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our housing crisis. Another 86,000 homeless people are staying with friends, “couch surfing”, in squats, makeshift dwellings, caravan parks and squalid rooming houses (ABS, 2001).
One and a half million Australians are living in poverty after paying their rent or mortgage.
Affordable housing is now a major social issue. Our current housing crisis is not just about homelessness and housing poverty, but the prospects for future generations of Australians to find decent, secure and affordable homes.
Through research and advocacy, we aim to support our clients more effectively, encourage social and policy change, and champion a fair, egalitarian and inclusive society.
