Homelessness in Melbourne: initial report 5th February 2007
The following intiial report was released on Monday by Brian Burdekin former federal Human Rights Commissioner. the study of over 5,000 homeless people contains new findings about the lenthg of time people are homeless and the impact of homelessness as a cause of mental health and drug problems.Through research and advocacy, we aim to support our clients more effectively, encourage social and policy change, and champion a fair, egalitarian and inclusive society.
Current initiatives and partnerships include:
- Contributing to what will be the Australia’s largest study of homeless people. Analysis of this data will help us to better understand pathways into and out of homelessness. This project is in partnership the Salvation Army and RMIT University.
- Resourcing a new affordable housing advocacy alliance to lobby for change and draw public attention to the housing crisis
- A longitudinal study tracing the experiences of 100 homeless people over a period of several years
- A sense making project to ascertain what average Australians understand about the experience of homelessness
- A speakers' bureau and schools program to share with other our understandings of housing poverty and homelessness
- Lobbying for State and National Affordable Housing Strategies
